Teen arrested after pursuit, water rescue

A police pursuit early Sunday morning ended with a vehicle in a pond and emergency workers rescuing two teens from the water.

The teen who was driving the vehicle was arrested, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

At 2:20 a.m., a sheriff’s deputy tried to stop a vehicle on Smith Valley Road, just west of State Road 135. The vehicle did not stop and continued east on Smith Valley Road, reaching speeds of 90 mph, the report said.

The chase continued south on Honey Creek Road, and a deputy used stop sticks, meant to deflate the tires of the vehicle, near Stones Crossing Road. But before hitting the stop sticks, the vehicle suddenly turned into a church parking lot and then drove into yards of houses along Honey Creek Road, the report said.

The vehicle then drove into a pond along Honey Creek Road and began to sink. Four teenagers who were in the vehicle, ages 15 to 17, got out of the vehicle in the water.

Two of the teens were able to swim to shore, but two others were struggling in the water. Both had gone under the water, with one going under multiple times, the report said.

Deputies got ropes out of their vehicles, and were able to get the other two teens to shore, the report said. All four teens were taken to Community Hospital South to be checked out.

The teen driver told deputies he ran because he only had a permit, and did not have a driver’s license, the report said.

The driver was arrested as a juvenile, and is facing a charge of fleeing police in a vehicle. The three other teens were not arrested, the report said.

Police are not identifying the teens because they are juveniles and one is facing a criminal charge, according to the sheriff’s office.

Multiple agencies were called to help with the pursuit and rescue, including Bargersville, Greenwood and New Whiteland police departments, and Bargersville, Greenwood and White River Township fire departments.
