Greenwood council member under investigation

A Greenwood city council member is under investigation by Indiana State Police.

The details of the investigation and any allegations made against council member Brent Corey, who has been an elected member of the Greenwood City Council since 2008, have not been released.

He has not been arrested or charged.

The investigation began when Greenwood police received a criminal complaint on June 28.

Corey was not available on Tuesday. Local attorneys Mike Kyle and Andy Baldwin have given Corey some legal advice but not yet been retained, Kyle said.

The investigation was started by Greenwood police last week after a report was made about Corey.

Police began investigating, and determined the case should be sent to Indiana State Police because of Corey’s position on the city council, Greenwood Police Chief John Laut said.

The police department wanted to be sure the case was seen as being handled properly and avoiding the appearance of a conflict of interest, Laut said.

As a city council member, Corey approves the budget of the police department, including requests to add new officers or equipment.

Laut declined to discuss any details of any allegations because he did not want to compromise the investigation, he said.

Indiana State Police Sgt. John Perrine said investigators had recently received the case from Greenwood.

He also declined to discuss any details of the case, except to say that state police are investigating Corey.

Corey, a Republican, has served on the city council for 10 years, and was most recently re-elected to a third term in 2015. He is an at-large member, meaning he represents the entire city, rather than being elected in a specific district. As a member of the city council, Corey also serves on the city’s plan commission.

He owns Sizemore Insurance Agency in Greenwood.
