Senior Promise offering August classes

A southside hospital is offering classes to senior citizens to help them understand organ donation, scams and self defense.

Franciscan Senior Promise has several August classes, most of which are free and open to the public.

All classes are at the Senior Promise complex, 8778 Madison Ave., Indianapolis. The events are free but registration is required because of limited space. For more information or to register, call 317-528-8277.

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 2, AAA and Medicare Lung Scans. Abdominal aortic aneurysm is a swelling in the body’s largest artery and it typically has no symptoms. Lung cancer screening uses low dosage computed tomography to detect abnormalities. Experts will explain how the two screenings work and what Medicare covers.

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 7,Organ Donation at Any Age. A representative from the Indiana Donor Network will discuss the opportunities to donate at any age and how the donor process works.

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 9, Stop the Bleed, Save a Life. A person with severe bleeding can die within five minutes. This Franciscan Health emergency department program teaches how to stop severe bleeding and help save lives.

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 15, Veterans Benefits: Millions of veterans and their families are eligible for Department of Veterans Affairs services, but many are not aware of what benefits are available and how to apply for them. This presentation will address what’s available and who is eligible to receive benefits.

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 17, Power Against Fraud and Scams. Presented by the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office, this workshop provides information on simple crime prevention tips such as identity theft, personal safety, telemarketing and home improvement scams, mail and fraud involving the internet, lottery and sweepstakes and charity-giving.

1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 22, For women only: Self-Defense Lecture and Demonstrations. Participants will learn how to defend themselves against attackers. Sherry Brown, a local and long-time karate instructor, will demonstrate how to use vital strikes, blocks and kicks to thwart attacks and enable a victim to get to safety. Also, she will demonstrate how to use pepper spray, defensive keys and offer tips on how to avoid being attacked.

 1 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Aug. 28: Seniors and the Opioids Crisis: Why are older adults at risk for prescription drug abuse? Most who suffer from this do so by accident because they take more medicine than other age groups. A range of related topics will be discussed during this workshop.
