Franklin wins county girls golf title

After finishing ahead of Center Grove in a tournament at Providence earlier this month, Franklin knew it had a chance to knock off the Trojans in Wednesday’s Johnson County tournament at The Legends.

Thanks in large part to a big day from sophomore Ellie Beavins, the Grizzly Cubs did just that.

Beavins shot a 78 to earn individual medalist honors and help lead Franklin to the team title. The Grizzly Cubs finished at 341, four shots up on 19th-ranked Center Grove.

Another sophomore, Liv Parramore, carded an 85 for Franklin, while senior Taylor Drake added an 87 and freshman Ava Ray had a 91.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

Grizzly Cubs coach Chris Kacarab was pleased with the performance of his young squad.

"They put in a lot of work the last 10 months so we could play a good two months this summer," he said. "They put in the work and it’s paying off, and I’m proud of them."

As the last group finished up on the 18th hole, Beavins was unsure whether her round would hold up as the best of the day, but she wound up edging Whiteland’s Bri Harwell (79) by one shot.

"I thought (Center Grove’s Lucy Young) was going to shoot better, and Bri, but I’m happy that I got first," Beavins said.

Young and Meg Fosnot each came in at 83 to lead Center Grove, which also got an 88 from Maddie Heineman and a 91 from Lauren Pagel.

Greenwood got an 84 from Maecee Terhune and good balance through the rest of the lineup to finish comfortably in third with a total of 368. Harwell’s round helped Whiteland beat out Indian Creek for fourth.

Terhune and Harwell joined Beavins, Young and Fosnot on the all-tournament team.

The team hardware, though, went home with the Grizzly Cubs, and Kacarab hopes that earning that trophy will give his team the confidence it needs to win a few more this season — especially since both next week’s Mid-State Conference tournament and the sectional will also be played at The Legends.

"Now they know it’s possible," he said. "Now I think the expectation would be to compete and win at conference, and to compete and win at sectional. The eyes really, we’re hoping to advance to state. I think we can do it this year."
