Sisters lead the way for Franklin girls soccer

Emilie Hill had been waiting years for a moment like the one she enjoyed late in the first half of Franklin’s girls soccer match at Whiteland last Wednesday.

The Grizzly Cub senior saw the ball on the foot of her younger sister, freshman defender Mollie Hill, and she turned and made a run forward, knowing the ball would end up exactly where it was supposed to be.

Emilie collected the pass and poked the ball into the back of the net for one of her four goals on the day.

"She can definitely get me the ball whenever I need it," Emilie Hill said of Mollie. "She also knows where I run, so I think it’s easier because we can read off each other that way."
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

During her first two high school seasons, Emilie got a chance to play with her older sister Delanie, now a sophomore at Marian University. She had been eagerly awaiting the opportunity to play one year with Mollie — and it’s easy for anyone who sees the two play together to understand why.

"(Emilie) knows where I put my balls for her to finish," Mollie said. "Just being able to play it over the top and her run on it — because her speed really helps, too. She’s really good at beating people with their speed."

Franklin coach Mari Weidman believes the benefits of the pairing extend well beyond their obvious chemistry with the ball.

"I think it’s helped having another competitive spirit on the field," Weidman said. "They are definitely two of our more competitive players; they are both really hard on themselves, but they’re also really good at vibing off of each other, keeping each other level and pushing each other."

While Delanie Hill always had a nose for the goal, scoring more than 100 of them during her high school years, Mollie fancies herself as more of a playmaker who sets the table for Emilie and her other teammates. The freshman has been used primarily in a defensive midfielder role, and she’s been able to impact the game at both ends from that spot.

"Her defensive skills are just so rock-solid that she has the ability to defend and get the ball up the field at the same time," Weidman said.

Like Mollie, Emilie is a defender on her club team — so the senior enjoys having the opportunity to play more of an offensive role for the Grizzly Cubs during the high school season.

The Evansville recruit leads Franklin with six goals scored.

"I like it a lot, playing up there," Emilie said. "Just knowing that I get to come to high school and play that role, it’s fun."

"She’s really good at being confident one-on-one with other people, and we need that up top," Weidman added. "In years past, we have struggled with getting the ball in the back of the net. … We need to be able to get some goals, and she’s able to use her skill and get us rolling in the right direction."

The lone downside for the two youngest Hill sisters is that they’ll only have this one season as high school teammates.

Having waited so long for it, they’re both determined to get as much out of it as they can.

"She wants to make the most, and I want to help her make the most, of her senior season," Mollie said of Emilie.
