Woman arrested on suspicion of stealing, meth possession

An Edinburgh woman was found with methamphetamine when she was stopped on the suspicion of shoplifting, police said.

Rebecca Jean Smith, 807 Hammond Loop, was arrested on charges of possession of methamphetamine and theft about 3 p.m. Sunday at the store in the 400 block of Mallory Parkway where she walked out with more than $120 in merchandise, according to a police report.

Security officers watched as Smith took multiple clothing items into a fitting room, and then came out of the room with nothing in her hands, the report states. When security officers checked the fitting room, the items were missing.

Smith then attempted to leave the store, but security officers stopped her in the parking lot, the report said.

Franklin police questioned Smith at the store. Officers asked her if she had anything illegal on her and she just stared at them, the report states. When they told her she would be searched, she pulled two bags of methamphetamine out of her purse, police said.

She told officers it was meth, which they confirmed with a field test.

Hammond, 26, was taken to the Johnson County jail and held on $4,400 bond.
