Indian Creek girls roll in home debut

In Indian Creek’s first girls basketball game of the season last weekend, Katie Burkman was kept pretty quiet.

She was much louder on Tuesday night.

The senior hit six 3-pointers on the way to a game-high 29 points as the Braves opened up their home and conference schedules with an easy 67-47 victory over Cascade.

"She was on a mission tonight," Indian Creek coach Brian Ferris said. "And they were falling; that’s always nice. Everybody kind of follows suit then, and there’s a lot of confidence building out there when you get somebody on fire like that early."

Burkman, held to three points in a loss at Martinsville last Saturday, got going right away. She scored seven in the first 4:33 of action to help spot the Braves a 9-2 lead. The Cadets trimmed that margin to 13-11 by the end of the opening quarter, but Burkman sank four more 3s and Jessie Hart added another to put Indian Creek comfortably in front, 30-13, with 3:48 to go in the half.

The Braves (1-1, 1-0 WIC) led at the break, 34-18. With 19 points, Burkman was outscoring Cascade by herself.

"Once I hit one or two, I’m feeling it and I want the ball back because I know I can drain them," said Burkman, who also grabbed nine rebounds.

A Burkman 3 followed by a steal and three-point play by Hannah Grider made it 46-24 with 3:10 to go in the third quarter, and Indian Creek was able to coast from there. The Cadets (0-2, 0-1) never got closer than 14 in the second half.

Grider finished with a solid all-around stat line of 11 points, six rebounds, four assists and five steals for Indian Creek, while Hart and Heather Maddox each added seven points.

Overall, nine different players scored for the Braves.

"Everybody that was out on the floor was giving us something," Ferris said. "They were all working together, they knew where each other were at, and there were a lot of people involved. And that’s who we want to be."
