Gun accidentally fired into neighbor’s apartment

A bullet flew through a Franklin man’s apartment on Monday night while he, his girlfriend and their three kids were home.

Franklin police said the bullet came through the back bedroom wall, went through the bedroom door and lodged into the bathroom door trim just before 7:30 p.m. at 1611 Franklin Place Court, in Franklin Place Apartments off U.S. 31.

The bullet was fired from a neighboring apartment, according to a police report.

Police knocked on the neighbor’s door, but no one answered, the report said. They reached out to a maintenance worker for a key and entered the apartment, where they retrieved the gun but found nothing suspicious or out of place, they said.

Later that night, police stopped a man returning to the apartment where the shot was fired. The man, Deshun Jefferson, said he knew why police wanted to talk to him and explained what happened, the report said.

He told police when he went to unholster his gun, he tripped, fell and the gun went off. He said he got scared and left the apartment. He asked police to store his gun at the police station for the time being, according to the report.

Jefferson has not been arrested or charged.

The information will be sent to the Johnson County Prosecutor’s Office, which will decide what, if any, charges to file.
