GCA girls roll at Edinburgh

Sharp shooting by Greenwood Christian combined with a cold effort by Edinburgh added up to a 59-43 win by the visiting Cougars in girls basketball action Thursday night.

Right away, both teams threw up plenty of 3s, only Edinburgh’s didn’t fall as often. GCA (6-4) was also aggressive on the boards, outfighting the Lancers on several occasions.

“We’re starting to come along from a shooting standpoint,” Greenwood Christian coach Alan Weems said. “I was really pleased with the way we worked, and I thought we handled things pretty well.”

Both teams had come into the game with some mighty big highs already this season with a couple of humbling lows.

Both had won games by more than 50 points — the Cougars recently blew out Central Christian by 58 and had two other wins by 48 and 50 points, respectively. Edinburgh had just come off a 95-19 blitz of Eminence and had two other 67-point wins earlier this year.

And both teams had lost big by 30 or more points, with Center Grove beating the Lancers by 31 in the Johnson County tournament and the Cougars getting drubbed by 35 against Franklin in the same tourney.

So on paper, this appeared to be a close contest.

That wasn’t the case in the first half.

Greenwood Christian shot fairly well, hitting 60 percent of its shots from the field. Meanwhile, Edinburgh was as cold as the weather, only getting 20 percent.

The Cougars shot well enough early to maintain a double-digit lead throughout. Edinburgh could not get any closer than 14 points.

Junior Alexis Mead had the hot hand early, hitting four 3-point shots in the first half for Greenwood Christian. The Lancers could not dig themselves out of that early hole.

“Our shot selection was a big part of (getting behind),” Edinburgh coach Amy Schilling said. “We tried to take it inside, but we were just taking our first shot and our 3s weren’t going in.”

Mead lead all scorers with 22 points. Sophomore Izzy Reed added 19 and added a game-high 12 rebounds. Savvanah Frye added 13 points.

For Edinburgh (4-5), Destiney Ramey led the way with 19 points. She got hot late, but by then it was too much for the Lancers to overcome.

“I thought we had some possessions where we moved the ball better in the second half, but then we would not move our feet and commit stupid fouls,” Schilling said.
