Letter: Media, honor guard errors in Bush honors

To the editor:

The mainstream media constantly called George H.W. Bush the youngest fighter pilot in the U.S. Navy.

Now I harbor a low opinion of the mainstream media, figuring they could not distinguish a battleship from a submarine, but they should know a fighter plane does not consist of a pilot and a crew of two! Bush should have been called the youngest pilot in the Navy.

Next, the honor guard carrying the U.S. flag was flawed. The rifle is always carried on the outside shoulder, thus protecting the flag. In the flawed formation, the rifleman to the left of the flag carried his rifle Right Shoulder Arms, thus destroying both the symmetry and symbolism of the formation. A simple Left Shoulder Arms easily remedies this gross error — the entire military command notwithstanding.

Kenneth R. DeVoe

Greenwood
