County unemployment up slightly from last year

Johnson County has the fourth lowest unemployment rate in the state, tied with four other counties, including nearby Hendricks County.

Three percent of Johnson County residents were unemployed last month, according to a report released this week by the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

In November, 342 more Johnson County residents were without jobs compared to the same time last year. The unemployment rate is about the same as it was in October — five more people were without jobs.

In November, 2,485 Johnson County residents were unemployed, up from 2,143 last year. But the county’s population grew by more than 2,300 people, the report said.

Bartholomew County (Columbus) and Dubois County in southern Indiana boasted the best unemployment rate in the state last month at 2.7 percent. Howard County (Kokomo) had the highest unemployment rate at 8.3 percent.

Indiana’s overall unemployment rate was 3.7 percent in November, up from 3.5 percent in October and 3.2 percent last year. The country’s unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in November.
