Boys basketball

GCA advances to Monrovia final

Champ McCorkle scored 22 points on 9-for-11 shooting to lead Greenwood Christian to an 80-66 victory over Scecina in the opening round of the Bulldog Holiday Classic at Monrovia on Friday morning.

Andrew Anderson added 16 points for the Cougars, who also got 13 points from Payton Modlin and 12 from Trey Spears.

GCA (6-3) followed with a 59-41 semifinal win over South Putnam in the afternoon behind 19 points from Anderson and 11 from McCorkle. The Cougars face the host Bulldogs in tonight’s championship game.

Warriors win tournament opener

Whiteland built a big first-half lead and held on for a 57-45 victory over Rock Creek Academy in the opening round of the South Ripley holiday tournament on Friday.

Brennan Neal led the Warriors (4-3) with 19 points, while Carter Crowe added 16. Whiteland was set to face Jennings County in a late semifinal game that did not finish before the Daily Journal’s print deadline.

Host Lancers reach title game

Edinburgh made it into the championship game of its own holiday tournament by pulling out a 50-44 overtime victory over New Washington in semifinal action on Friday night.

The Lancers (7-8), who will face Jac-Cen-Del for the title today at 4 p.m., defeated South Decatur in the opening round by a 77-51 score.

Franklin College

Women’s basketball falls to No. 2 Saints

Despite team-high 19 points from Bayleigh Walker and 13 from Britney Ballard, but Franklin College was no match for second-ranked and unbeaten Thomas More on Friday, suffering a 100-54 defeat.
