Search for man who fell in water near Edinburgh dam suspended

Several police and fire agencies from multiple counties spent more than two hours Thursday night searching for a man who fell into the water near a dam in Edinburgh.

Two women driving near the Big Blue River at State Road 252 and River Road just before 5 p.m. Thursday saw the man fall into the water. He surfaced once, but was not seen again, Johnson County Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

By 7 p.m., the man still had not been found as crews prepared to suspend the search for the night due to high water, winds and quickly dropping temperatures, he said.

"He fell in right at the dam. It’s going to be incredibly hard to get to him with the current of the water," Burgess said. "It’s a low-head dam. It’s virtually impossible to get out of it."

Crews used boats and drones to search for the man, and several dive teams were on standby from Johnson County, the Shelby County Sheriff’s Office, Department of Natural Resources, Edinburgh police and fire departments, the Columbus Fire Department and the Franklin Fire Department.

The man’s age is unclear at this time.
