Stoplight coming to Worthsville, Collins intersection

Drivers getting off the newest Interstate 65 exit in Johnson County will face a new stoplight, which will be necessary due to new industrial developments coming to the area.

The developer for the Amazon facility that’s being built in Greenwood is willing to front the bill for a new stoplight at Worthsville and Collins roads now that the city has agreed to manage the construction of it.

The amount of the grant from Scannell Properties will be determined at a later date, but the company has said it will likely be enough to cover the design and construction of the traffic signal south of where the 615,000-square-foot facility is being built.

"Scannell has expressed that they don’t want it to be an open checkbook, so to speak, so they are certainly concerned about the cost. But that’s something we can discuss," said Daniel Johnston, city engineer.

As of now, Greenwood will not pay any costs related to the new stoplight, but that may change depending on how much Scannell and Amazon are willing to grant the city. The city would still be responsible for managing the design and construction though, Johnston told the Redevelopment Commission Tuesday night.

"City staff worked with Scannell Properties and with Amazon and identified several benefits to installing a traffic signal at Worthsville Road and Collins Road," Johnston said.

Both companies have said they want the signal to be operational by this fall. The Amazon receive center is expected to be up and running by 2020.
