Trojans win another county golf tournament

<p>The championship that Center Grove’s boys golf team is really interested in will be decided up at Carmel’s Prairie View layout in a couple of weeks.</p><p>Winning another Johnson County championship, though, always serves as a nice appetizer for what the Trojans hope will be a bountiful postseason.</p><p>All five Center Grove players shot 76 or better at The Legends during Thursday’s county tournament, good for a team total of 295 and a 25-shot victory over runner-up Greenwood.</p>[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery<p>“They hit the ball really well today,” Center Grove coach Matt Rodman said. “Played with confidence. It’s a good start to the postseason run that’s about to happen.”</p><p>The fourth-ranked Trojans’ depth and balance was on full display, as the team’s No. 5 player, Caleb Tidd, led the squad with a 1-under-par round of 71. Luke DeHaven was next in line with a 74, Alex Heck and Mitchel Sanders each came in at 75 and Peyton Short wound up with a 76.</p><p>“I felt like the putter finally was rolling in the putts I needed to make today,” Tidd said. “I had pretty good par saves, and then finishing the front nine with three straight birdies was helpful.”</p><p>The second-place Woodmen got a career-best round from surprise medalist Trent Vislay, who carded a 2-under 70 out of the No. 4 spot.</p><p>So what was working for the sophomore?</p><p>“Basically everything,” Vislay said.” Drives were going straight, putts draining like no other. Even though it was windy, I still had a great match.”</p><p>Braxton Christie added a 78 for Greenwood, while Jackson Watkins, Elijah Poe and Jacob Rothaar all finished at 86.</p><p>A balanced Whiteland squad finished third at 332. Will Davis’ 80 led the way for the Warriors, with Zach Ricketts close behind at 81. Walt Brady (85) and Jacob Johnson (86) rounded out the scoring.</p><p>Just behind the Warriors at 334 was Franklin, which was paced by a 74 from Damon Dickey. Blake McIntire added an 81 for the Grizzly Cubs, followed by Quin Edwards (89) and Ian McCullough (90).</p><p>Greenwood Christian finished fifth at 384, led by 90s from Sutton Piercefield and Matthew Heldman. Indian Creek totaled 395, paced by Chandler Donahue’s 93.</p><p>Bladen Hancock had an 83 for Edinburgh, which was unable to field a full team.</p><p>Vislay headed up the All-County team named after the tournament, joined by Tidd, DeHaven, Dickey, Heck and Sanders.</p><p>The local teams will return to The Legends on Monday to compete in the sectional. The Trojans will again come in as a solid favorite, and they’re liking the momentum that Thursday’s win gives them going into that tourney.</p><p>“We’re primed and ready to start the sectional,” Rodman said.</p>
