Fire damages Center Grove area home

A fire at a home in the Center Grove area caused about $50,000 in damage late Thursday morning.

The White River Township Fire Department was dispatched to the home in the 600 block of Shady Lane in Greenwood at 11:41 a.m. to a report of smoke coming off of a roof.

The home is near the intersection of Fry Road and State Road 135. No one was injured in the blaze, but a dog was rescued by a neighbor.

A neighbor was watching the home and taking care of a dog while the homeowners were away when they noticed the smoke, White River Fire Chief Jeremy Pell said.

Firefighters contained the fire in less than 10 minutes. The blaze was mostly in the attic of the home, Pell said.

The fire is still under investigation, but investigators suspect the fire started in the area of the kitchen and most of the $50,000 in damage is to the kitchen. The rest of the home sustained smoke damage as well, he said.

Pell is crediting the neighbor with calling 911 immediately when they saw smoke. The damage could have been worse if the neighbor had not called promptly or been watching the home closely, he said.

"The fact that neighbors called 911 quickly made all the difference in this fire," Pell said.

The Greenwood Fire Department assisted, he said.
