Domestic dispute leads to death threat in Greenwood

Police arrested a Greenwood man who has been previously convicted of attempted murder on five felony charges after a dispute led to battery and death threats early Sunday.

The SWAT team was called to take him into custody, police said.

Charles E. Denson Jr., 26, of 223 Peachtree Lane, was arrested on charges of carrying a firearm with a previous violent felony conviction, criminal confinement, intimidation, battery and pointing a firearm, all at least Level 4 felonies. His partner said he repeatedly shoved her, threatened to kill her, pointed a gun at her and wouldn’t let her leave his apartment, according to a police report.

Denson was also arrested on charges of unlawful possession of a firearm by a domestic batterer and criminal mischief, both misdemeanors.

The events unfolded about 3 a.m. Sunday when Denson Jr.’s partner accused him of cheating on her. Denson Jr. then began yelling at her and following her around the apartment. He began physically confronting her, pushing her and grabbing and pulling her hair, according to the report.

Denson Jr. got his pistol from the bathroom and as his partner picked up her phone, he grabbed it and threw it on the floor, shattering the screen. Denson Jr. then held the gun with both hands, pointing it at her and threatening to kill her. He shined the gun’s laser on her and laughed several times and also refused to let her leave the apartment, using his body to block the door. Eventually, he put the firearm down, according to the report.

About 4:11 a.m. Greenwood police received a call about the domestic dispute. An officer knocked on the door and announced himself but didn’t get a response, although the officer heard rustling and movement inside. The officer called the SWAT team as backup.

The SWAT team apprehended Denson Jr. after a passerby saw him on the roof of the apartment. Denson was taken into custody and moved to the Johnson County jail, where he is held on $15,500 bond.

Denson Jr. has previous felony convictions of attempted murder and domestic battery, according to the report.
