Edinburgh football runs out of gas against Twisters

It was good while it lasted, but it didn’t last long enough.

The good was Edinburgh taking the lead for the first time this season early in the contest, but Oldenburg Academy used its power running game to ultimately wear down the Lancers and take a 26-12 win to spoil homecoming.

At first this looked to be the Edinburgh’s night.

However, penalties nullified two touchdowns, and an interception in the end zone by Oldenburg ruined whatever chances the Lancers had.

“(Oldenburg) was an even team like us,” coach Tyler DeSpain said. “We could have really capitalized on that, but the kids were really excited once we took the lead.”

Austin Streeval ran in untouched from the 4, giving the Lancers their first lead of the 2019 season with 1:26 left in the first.

Unfortunately, it didn’t last long once the Twisters made a major adjustment on offense.

Oldenburg Academy started out with the T-formation, but when that wasn’t working in the first quarter, they switched to the wing-T.

That paid immediate dividends and not only gave the Lancers fits but allowed the Twisters to ground out 272 yards and keep the ball out of Edinburgh’s hands.

Oldenburg didn’t have a first down in the first quarter but had 16 overall, and after three pass attempts in the first, the visitors didn’t throw again the rest of the game.

“For some reason once they scored, the kids seem like we’re down. I still haven’t figured out how to fix that. It was like that last year and against Tindley and again (tonight).”

Oldenburg scored twice in the second quarter on runs of 2 and 3 yards by Caleb Lehman.

Abe Peetz scored from the 1 yard out in the third, but the killer was a 63-yard run by Dom McPhee with 8:33 left in the game for the final tally.

McPhee ended up with 146 yards rushing on 18 carries.

“We may have gotten gassed a little bit,” said DeSpain.

Penalties and poor snaps potentially kept the Lancers from a few more scores. Edinburgh was blessed with great yardage throughout but couldn’t maintain any momentum.

The Lancers had 30 yards of penalties in the first quarter alone and victimized themselves with some snaps that went over quarterback Tyson Sackman’s 6-5 frame.

Because of that, Sackman was sacked four times for a loss of 34 yards and a few what-might-have-beens.

Edinburgh did score again on an 11-yard pass from Sackman to Lennon DeLoach.

Sackman was 12 of 17 passing for 122 yards.

“We are improving,” said DeSpain, “but it’s going to be a tough three weeks coming up.”

Edinburgh tries to crack the win column again next week with its first road game of the season at Switzerland County.
