Greenwood football falls to top-ranked Mooresville

For the second consecutive week, Greenwood was looking to pull off (on paper, at least) a big upset.

Mooresville, ranked No. 1 in Class 4A, had other ideas, grounding out a 31-7 over the host Woodmen.

Greenwood also contributed to its own demise with two fumbles in Mooresville territory and an ill-timed interception, all in the first half.

The Woodmen allowed 319 yards total and 241 of those on the ground — a high number for a Mike Gillin-coached team. But when you have the horses to run and an offensive line that averages more than 250 pounds, like the Pioneers do, the passing game is a secondary weapon.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery

“We gave the momentum the entire first half. Our kids played hard,” Greenwood coach Mike Campbell said. “We just couldn’t get out of our own way.”

While Mooresville had no trouble grounding out the yardage, Greenwood was finding it both easy and difficult.

The Woodmen were picking their spots, twice getting into Pioneer territory in the first quarter, but the trouble was they couldn’t close the deal. That was never more evident in the first quarter when, after a completion and Pioneer personal foul put the ball on the Mooresville 22, four straight incomplete passes left Greenwood with nothing.

Mooresville opened things with an 11-yard rushing touchdown from Breken Greene. After the first fumble from Greenwood — which happened at the Pioneer 38 — the visitors drove on the ground again, this time with Caden Robinson going in from the 1.

An ill-advised pass with less than a minute to go allowed the Pioneers to really take charge. Mooresville’s Dane Stevenson intercepted Oliver Rau’s pass and ran to the Greenwood 22. Three plays later, Mooresville quarterback Kalija Perry hit Braden Evans for a 17-yard score.

Campbell said that interception was all on him.

“I tried to get something going when I should have just held on to the ball and got out of (the first half),” said Campbell. “I’m taking ownership on that. That’s not the kids’ fault.”

At the start of the second half, the Pioneers pretty much ended the game on a 1-yard run by Breken Greene that made it 28-0.

A 30-yard field goal by Brock Bodell added to the misery until an electrifying moment for the Woodmen and their fans came.

Unfortunately, the 94-yard kickoff return by junior Tanner Allen was Greenwood’s lone bright spot of the night. By that time, Mooresville had the game in the refrigerator and the door was closed.

Greenwood junior Ethan Haessig led all rushers with 92 yards, and Rau outpassed his counterpart Perry, 86 yards to 78.

“I thought we made some nice plays and tightened things up as the game went along,” said Campbell. “We have to respond to adversity, and plenty left to do, and I think we can do that next week.”

Greenwood (2-2, 1-1 Mid-State) will travel to Plainfield next week.
