Gas station proposed east of interstate

Development continues east of a prime Greenwood interstate interchange with the addition of a gas station and convenience store.

The city’s plan commission on Monday unanimously approved a Casey’s General Store on 2.6 acres of a 9-acre lot at the southeast corner of County Line and Graham roads, across the street from where the new Cummins facility is going.

The gas station and convenience store will be the second gas station east of Interstate 65 in Greenwood, and the first off County Line Road to the east. It will feature 12 gas pumps, and trucks will deliver fuel to the station every two to three days, according to city documents.

This will be the first Casey’s in Greenwood, but there are nearby stores in Southport and Franklin. The company has more than 2,100 stores in 16 Midwestern states, according to its website. The convenience store is known for its food options, including specialty pizzas, which can be delivered.

The land is already zoned for commercial use, but is currently farmland, according to city documents, so it will not need to go before any other city boards for approval.

County Line Partners LLC has owned the vacant land, valued at $15,600, since at least 2010. The Indianapolis-based developer also owned the 95 acres across the street that the city bought earlier this year to give to Cummins.

City officials had hoped the announcement that Cummins Inc., a Columbus-based Fortune 160 power generation and diesel engine company, will build an information technology and digital hub at the intersection of County Line and Graham roads would help spur further growth in the area, which they have long struggled to develop. The 100,000 square-foot office building is expected to bring at least 500 jobs as early next year, with the possibility of up to 1,500 jobs if a second phase is built.

The city hopes to attract upscale hotels, restaurants and retail to the rest of that area, Mayor Mark Myers has said.
