Indian Creek football thumps Manual

Indian Creek would have liked to have used its final regular-season home game against winless Indianapolis Manual as a tuneup, but that would be too kind.

More like a mash-up, which was expected with two teams heading in totally opposite directions.

Indian Creek whipped winless Indianapolis Manual 57-8 in an emotionally-charged game on Senior Night.

In winning their fifth straight game, the Braves (5-2) hit the 50-point mark for the second straight game (and third overall) and had yet another game with a running clock. It was just what the doctor ordered after Neil Sego, the father of Indian Creek senior running back Owen Sego, died in a plane crash Thursday in Michigan.

Owen Sego rushed for two touchdowns Friday.

“We’ve had a very traumatic 24 hours and I was just happy to see the kids rally around each other,” Indian Creek coach Brett Cooper said.

The onslaught started immediately as senior Roman Purcell took kept the ball on a quarterback bootleg and ran 73 yards untouched for the score.

That set the tone of the night as Indian Creek scored three more times in the first quarter with Connor Fruits and Sego scoring on runs of 13 and 6 yards, and Jordan Gorham hitting paydirt with a 55-yard punt return.

It was quite the night for Fruits, as he gained a total of 161 yards, with a startling 101 in the first quarter alone.

Purcell also threw for a 51-yard pass to Gorham and ran for another 47-yard touchdown. Purcell gained 133 yards rushing in all and threw for 100 yards.

Closing out the scoring in the first half was sophomore James Kelly, who recovered a Redskin fumble in the end zone.

Sego also scored on a 59-yard run in the third quarter before the Redskins finally got on the board with a 27-yard touchdown pass from D’Fayebeon Pittman to Robert Orkman.

Not that Indian Creek needed the help, but the Redskins didn’t do themselves any favors, getting 16 penalties for 120 yards, more than they gained offensively, which was 97.

All told, the Braves racked up more than 500 yards to Manual’s 62.

Indian Creek travels to Cloverdale next Friday for its final Western Indiana Conference East game before the conference playoffs in Week 9.

“We’ll look at Cloverdale tomorrow and try to finish the conference undefeated,” Cooper said.
