High school football: Week 8 previews

Greenwood (3-4) at Franklin (6-1)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Webcast: woodmenbroadcasting.com

Recent history: The Woodmen rallied for a 31-28 home win last season, extending their series win streak to four.

Sagarin ratings: Greenwood 60.92 (86th in Indiana), Franklin 76.47 (39th)

Players to watch: Greenwood — QB Oliver Rau, RB Ethan Haessig, RB/LB Gavin Ruppert, WR/DB Tanner Allen, LB Joe Bassler; Franklin — QB Drew Byerly, RB Jalen Ward, WR Christian McClure, LB Brendan Couch, LB Noah Crow

What to look for: The Woodmen come in as a pretty clear underdog, but don’t count them out; Franklin appeared to have this game won last year before Greenwood’s superior size and strength at the line of scrimmage wore the Grizzly Cubs down. This time around, Franklin should be better equipped for that battle in the trenches, but the Woodmen will need to maintain an advantage there if they hope to slow the second-ranked scoring offense in Class 5A and pull off the upset.

Lawrence North (2-5) at Center Grove (3-4)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: centergrovefootball.com

Recent history: The Trojans have won 13 straight meetings since 2005, including a 38-17 triumph last fall.

Sagarin ratings: Lawrence North 91.21 (16th), Center Grove 100.03 (10th)

Players to watch: Lawrence North — QB Donaven McCulley, RB Bishr Jones, WR Omar Cooper, DB Jeremy Lee; Center Grove — QB Tayven Jackson, RB Connor Delp, RB Daniel Weems, DL Caden Curry, LB Gabe Boyd

What to look for: The Wildcats’ season has been similar to that of the Trojans so far — close games against tough teams that just haven’t broken their way, such as last week’s one-point loss to Warren Central. This figures to be another tight one, so the outcome could end up hinging on a key turnover here or there. Lawrence North’s offense, which hasn’t been held under 20 points all season, will present a challenge for the Center Grove defense.

Plainfield (4-3) at Whiteland (4-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Warriors have won seven of the last eight, with the lone blemish coming in 2017. Whiteland won a year ago, 35-27.

Sagarin ratings: Plainfield 69.21 (55th), Whiteland 75.14 (40th)

Players to watch: Plainfield — QB Cael Vanderbush, RB Rickey Alsum, RB Jarrett Stephen, LB Jacob Platt, LB Mason Scott; Whiteland — QB Brant Kunz, RB Melvin Taylor, RB Desmen Singleton, DL A.J. Beil, LB Jacob Schultz

What to look for: The Warriors seem to have hit their stride during a three-game win streak, while the Quakers have dropped back-to-back games against Mid-State Conference leaders Decatur Central and Franklin. Will the teams’ fortunes continue trending in those directions? Whiteland’s defense, which had some difficulties early in the season, has allowed just 47 points over the last four weeks. Four different Warriors have 100-yard rushing games.

Indian Creek (5-2) at Cloverdale (1-6)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: Since joining the WIC, the Braves have won their three games against the Clovers by a combined 124-8 margin, including last year’s 41-0 rout.

Sagarin ratings: Indian Creek 49.70 (123rd), Cloverdale 10.93 (269th)

Players to watch: Indian Creek — QB Roman Purcell, RB Connor Fruits, WR/DB Owen Neathery, LB Brett Barger, DB Jordan Gorham; Cloverdale — QB/LB Jake Smith, RB/LB Caydhan Stevens, LB Trevor Woods, DB Hunter Fox

What to look for: The Braves have shut the Clovers out the last two years and have a decent chance to do so again if they can contain Stevens, who leads Cloverdale offensively (751 yards rushing) and defensively (59 tackles, 10.5 sacks). This game should serve as little more than a tuneup for Indian Creek, which is all but certain to host Northview for the WIC championship next week.

Edinburgh (0-7) at Rock Creek Academy (2-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: This is the Lancers’ first game against the Lions, who are in just their fifth season.

Sagarin ratings: Edinburgh minus-6.41 (306th), Rock Creek minus-25.06 (318th)

Players to watch: Edinburgh — QB Tyson Sackman, RB/LB Austin Streeval, WR/DB Caleb Dewey, WR/DB Darius Bennett, WR/DB Riley Palmeter; Rock Creek — QB/LB Johnathon Browning-Sloan, RB/LB Kendrick Peyton, WR/LB Luis Corrales, OL/DL Keelan Payne

What to look for: The Lancers find themselves in the position of being favored for the first time all season, at least according to Sagarin’s computer, though they do face an athletic team on the road. Will Edinburgh have the confidence to pull it out after back-to-back lopsided defeats against the two toughest teams on its schedule? Keeping Browning-Sloan in check, both on the ground and in the air, will be a key for the Lancer defense.

Roncalli (2-5) at Columbus (Ohio) Northland (3-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com (audio only; video available on Roncalli’s YouTube and Facebook pages)

Recent history: This will be the first-ever meeting between the two teams.

Sagarin ratings: Roncalli 66.56 (66th), Columbus Northland N/A

Players to watch: Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Baron Huebler, WR Kyle Lockard, WR Ryan Papandria, DE Jack Wardzala; Columbus Northland — RB Dayzon Busby, WR Rasi Bailey

What to look for: The Rebels venture into the great unknown with their first out-of-state matchup since 2007. The Vikings got off to a terrible start this season, getting outscored 169-7 in their first three games, but they’ve bounced back with three convincing conference wins in a row. Likewise, Roncalli has some momentum with two quality victories in recent weeks. Can Scott Marsh’s club keep it going on this long road trip?
