High school football: Week 9 previews

Whiteland (5-3) at Greenwood (3-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: woodmenbroadcasting.com

Recent history: The Woodmen had won in 2016 and 2017 before the Warriors turned the tables with a 40-0 rout last season.

Sagarin ratings: Whiteland 74.40 (46th in Indiana), Greenwood 59.77 (94th)

Players to watch: Whiteland — RB Gavin Lutz, RB Dalton Murray, RB Desmen Singleton, DL A.J. Beil, LB Jacob Schultz; Greenwood — QB Oliver Rau, RB Ethan Haessig, RB/LB Gavin Ruppert, WR/DB Tanner Allen, LB Joe Bassler

What to look for: The Woodmen come in reeling after a blowout loss at Franklin, their fourth in the last five weeks; the Warriors, meanwhile, look like their usual October selves, having won four in a row behind an extremely balanced and unpredictable rushing attack. Can Greenwood get some positive momentum heading into the postseason? Perhaps a passing game that looked impressive in the fourth quarter last week can get the home team going.

Center Grove (4-4) vs. Cathedral (6-2)

at Arsenal Tech

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: centergrovefootball.com

Recent history: The Trojans have won four of five meetings, including last year’s 34-7 triumph.

Sagarin ratings: Center Grove 95.73 (10th), Cathedral 99.99 (third)

Players to watch: Center Grove — QB Tayven Jackson, RB Connor Delp, RB Daniel Weems, DL Caden Curry, LB Gabe Boyd; Cathedral — QB Orin Edwards, RB Daylen Hall, WR Camden Jordan, LB Will Goheen, LB Quinton Cannon

What to look for: The Fighting Irish have been on a roll lately with three straight wins — including a 28-7 victory over the same Louisville Trinity team that beat Carmel and Warren Central the first two weeks of the season. Edwards (20 passing TDs) leads an explosive offense that had scored at least 28 points in every game before getting just 21 last week. Using Weems and the run game to control the clock will be key for the Trojans in a tough final test before the tournament.

Franklin (7-1) at Decatur Central (6-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Recent history: The Hawks’ 42-15 win at Franklin last season was their eighth straight in the series.

Sagarin ratings: Franklin 76.98 (37th), Decatur Central 81.14 (28th)

Players to watch: Franklin — QB Drew Byerly, RB Jalen Ward, WR Christian McClure, LB Brendan Couch, LB Noah Crow; Decatur Central — QB Peyton Horsley, RB Carreon Underwood, WR Javon Tracy, WR Kenny Tracy, DL Jordan Miles

What to look for: The Grizzly Cub seniors saw four varsity wins in their first three years of high school; tonight, they’re playing for a sectional title. To get it, they’ll have to prevail in what shapes up as a likely shootout between two of the top five scoring teams in Class 5A. Much like the Grizzly Cubs’ Week 6 game against Martinsville, this one might just come down to who has the ball last — unless a key turnover swings the tide in someone’s favor.

Northview (6-2) at Indian Creek (6-2)

(WIC championship game)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The lone matchup between the schools came in last year’s WIC title game, with the Knights taking a 32-22 victory on their home field.

Sagarin ratings: Northview 57.07 (108th), Indian Creek 52.23 (125th)

Players to watch: Northview — QB Keegan Garrison, RB Korbin Allen, WR Brylar Metz, TE/DE Ilias Gordon, LB Braxton Sampson; Indian Creek — QB Roman Purcell, RB Connor Fruits, WR/DB Owen Neathery, LB Brett Barger, DB Jordan Gorham

What to look for: The Braves have reached the WIC title game in each of their three seasons in the conference, only to lose each time. Might this one be different? The answer could hinge on a battle between two of the league’s most dynamic players in Purcell and Gordon, a disruptive defensive presence with nine sacks and 16 tackles for loss. Purcell and Fruits have run almost at will against league opponents so far, but this week promises to be tougher sledding. Can that dynamic duo help put Indian Creek over the top for the first time?

Indianapolis Crimson Knights (4-3) at Edinburgh (1-7)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Recent history: The Lancers are 3-2 in the series since 2012, but the Crimson Knights won the last two meetings, most recently a 41-6 victory in 2016.

Sagarin ratings: Indianapolis Crimson Knights N/A, Edinburgh minus-1.19 (306th)

What to look for: If nothing else, this game — an early-season fill-in after original Week 9 opponent Dugger Union cut its season short — should give the Lancers a decent idea of where they stand heading into the postseason. Edinburgh’s sectional opener will be against Indiana School for the Deaf, which the Crimson Knights defeated by a 32-8 margin last week. If Tyler DeSpain’s club can knock this team off, it’ll have to feel pretty good about its chances next week.

Guerin Catholic (5-3) at Roncalli (3-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com (audio only; video available on Roncalli’s YouTube and Facebook pages)

Recent history: The Rebels have taken all three meetings since the series began in 2016, winning last year on the road by a 20-10 margin.

Sagarin ratings: Guerin Catholic 75.58 (41st), Roncalli 64.74 (74th)

Players to watch: Guerin Catholic — QB Christian Gelov, RB Gus Baumgartner, WR Bernie McGuinness, LB Tom Hokanson, LB Jagger Albert; Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Baron Huebler, WR Kyle Lockard, WR Ryan Papandria, DE Jack Wardzala

What to look for: After a dismal start, the Rebels seem to be putting things together at the right time, having just put together back-to-back wins for the first time since September of 2017. Leffler is becoming more of a two-way threat on offense, and Wardzala has been particularly disruptive on the defensive front the last two weeks. Both will likely need to turn in big efforts again for Roncalli to close out the regular season on a high note.
