Race car driver dreams test limits of support

It is suggested that a good wife be supportive of her husband. In theory, it seems such support would be rather conducive to a successful marriage. But put yourself in my Skechers — the Hubby announced he wants to become a driver.

No, not the Uber kind — the A.J Foyt variety.

It dawned on him after our three adult daughters and son-in-law gifted him with an Indy Racing Experience IndyCar ride in a two-seater. It took exactly two 180-mph laps around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway to detour his career course. Look, I don’t want to be a Debby Downshifter, but the man I married wants to throw away over three decades of providing central Indiana with great health care to nurture a half-horse-powered idea to metamorphose as a Tony Kannan wanna-be.

I don’t want you readers to think I’m a callous, unsupportive dream-wrecker, because I did honestly attempt to encourage his new Indy Car Driver aspirations.

“Well, that’s great honey — but I guess you’ll have to get rid of all your hunting and fishing gear since you definitely won’t have time for any extra hobbies with all that driver’s training you’ll have to do,” I said.

The Hubby nodded with that huge “Indy Racing Experience” grin still plastered to his face and walked back to the garage.

I began to panic when I saw him sorting through his fishing gear.

I tried to distract him: “Hey Hubby, have you ever thought about becoming a professional fisherman? You’re really good at it!”

“No time now,” he answered succinctly like I was timing him with a stopwatch, as he continued to sort his fishing gear.

Trepidation built, as I silently began calculating the cost of his new career:

Flame-retardant race suit: 1,999.95

Helmet: $474.99

Gloves: $156

Boots: $139

Neck support: $1,049

Our only hope is to try and get him signed and sponsored through a racing team, I daydreamed, so we don’t actually have to buy the Indy car. But just in case, I found a sharp red, yellow and blue Indy Car Dallara 4 on eBay for only $37,000 — with free local pickup! It has a Honda chassis and ran six years in the Indy 500, from 2005-2011. Unfortunately, it has no engine, but it does come with a ton of spare parts.

In shear desperation, I mentioned: “Husband, didn’t archery deer hunting season begin on October 1st?

“Yes,” he answered without looking up.

“Maybe you should go soon — you know — before the firearm hunter season starts.”

He looked up, half-grinned: “Great idea, I’ll plan on it the next few weekends.”

It feels tremendous being a supportive wife.
