High school football: Regional previews

Class 6A

Center Grove (6-5) at Warren Central (8-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: centergrovefootball.com

Recent history: The Warriors have won the last four meetings, including this year’s season opener (21-14) and a 2018 semistate (27-20).

Sagarin ratings: Center Grove 96.05 (eighth in Indiana, fifth in Class 6A), Warren Central 97.45 (fifth in Indiana, fourth in 6A)

Players to watch: Center Grove — QB Tayven Jackson, RB Daniel Weems, RB Connor Delp, WR Trent Veith, DL Caden Curry, LB Gabe Boyd, LB Jackson Schott; Warren Central — QB Cobe Moore, RB Randy Wells Jr., WR Derek Allen, WR DeMarcus Brown, OL Dennis Prater, DL Marquise Cross, DB Willie Eaton

What to look for: The outcome, as is usually the case when these teams meet, can’t be predicted ahead of time. Warren Central rallied for the winning score with 2:50 left in Week 1, and the Trojans were 6 yards away from a tying score when time ran out. Last November, the unbeaten Warriors needed a goal-line stand to hold on after nearly blowing a 20-0 first-quarter lead. Center Grove isn’t the same team it was in August or even early October, looking dominant in its two sectional victories. Can it get a different result than it has in its last three trips to this stadium?

Class 4A

Roncalli (7-5) at Mt. Vernon (10-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m.

Webcast: rebelmedianetwork.com (audio only; video available on Roncalli’s YouTube and Facebook pages)

Recent history: The teams have not met since 1999, when the Rebels picked up a 27-6 regional victory.

Sagarin ratings: Roncalli 67.56 (67th, 15th in 4A), Mt. Vernon 65.51 (73rd, 17th in 4A)

Players to watch: Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Baron Huebler, WR Kyle Lockard, DE Jack Wardzala, DB Dominic Brown; Mt. Vernon — QB Gehrig Slunager, RB/DB Rylan Cole, WR Dawan Langston, WR Ashden Gentry, LB Charlie Moore

What to look for: The Rebels have roared back from a dreadful 1-5 start to win six in a row, gaining strength as they’ve gone. Their prospects tonight, though, could hinge on the health status of Huebler, who left last week’s sectional victory with an apparent shoulder injury. Ryan Papandria has taken the first-team tailback reps this week and will be ready if needed. The Marauders, winners of seven straight, have seen their fortunes rise the last two seasons under Mike Kirschner, who came over after steering Ben Davis to the 6A state title in 2017. Can Wardzala and the Roncalli defense disrupt a potent Mt. Vernon passing game?
