Latest Colts fiasco leaves room for improvement

Television remote controls were invented in the 1950s, the same decade Indianapolis Colts owner Jim Irsay entered the world.

This slice of coincidence matters in that none of the National Football League’s 32 fan bases can possibly be switching channels faster than Colts fans these past few weeks. Right now, a two-hour Weather Channel holiday special seems like preferred viewing over watching Indy underachieve in every facet possible.

“And now, let’s take a look back at famous Dec. 25 tornadoes.”

Speaking of demolition, the 34-7 drubbing the Colts endured at New Orleans on Monday should have been worse. No one would blame Howard Cossell, Frank Gifford and Don Meredith for doing 360s in their respective resting spots.

Indy’s lone bright spot was taking the Saints’ imposingly loud crowd out of the game early by making them disinterested. A brilliant strategy if you’re capable of a comeback, which this Colts team clearly isn’t.

By midway through the third quarter, Indianapolis quarterback Jacoby Brissett, who was on the embarrassing end of a 27-0 score, had no trouble communicating with teammates before the ball was snapped.

Speaking of Brissett, he needs to show significant improvement these final two weeks of the regular season or Irsay and general manager Chris Ballard are going shopping for a new face of the offense in the spring. I’m guessing they will anyway due to Brissett’s collection of overthrows, underthrows and untimely throws.

Part of me admires Brissett for not using his tweaked knee as an excuse for why he’s performed so poorly — if, in fact, that’s the reason. If it is, he shouldn’t be out there slinging passes eight yards over the heads of open receivers.

The 2020 NFL Draft is April 23-25 in Las Vegas, and it’s time for Indianapolis to roll the dice. Slated to select in the teens in the first round as of now, the Colts need to invest in a quarterback with one of their first three picks.

With two selections in the second round, I’m guessing we might eventually see Washington’s Jacob Eason or Georgia’s Jake Fromm walking around in a Colts baseball cap. Take the other second-round pick and invest in a dependable receiver, because the offense is fried garbage when wideout T.Y. Hilton misses a game due to injury.

The defense and kicking game need to be addressed, as well. Adam Vinatieri surely won’t return and — hello! — Saints quarterback Drew Brees completed 29 of 30 passes on Monday. A defensive tackle or linebacker talented enough to immediately break the starting lineup is badly needed.

What little I watched Monday night before flipping channels was embarrassing in terms of effort, strategy and execution. The Colts looked as though they didn’t want to be there, and, in terms of competitiveness, they weren’t.
