Inmate found dead at Johnson County jail

A man died Saturday night at the Johnson County jail.

Joan M. Ventura, 28, was found dead in his cell from an apparent suicide during the nightly watch at 9:26 p.m. Saturday. No foul play is suspected, Sheriff Duane Burgess said.

Jail staff attempted CPR and used an automatic defibrillator on Ventura, but neither worked. The Franklin Fire Department also responded, according to a news release from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office. He was pronounced dead at the jail, the news release said

Ventura, of Indianapolis, had been at the jail since March 25 for violating probation, according to the news release. He was moved to the Johnson County jail from the Marion County jail.

In January, he was sentenced by a judge at the Greenwood City Court to one year probation for a criminal trespassing incident in September 2019, according to online court records.

Ventura was booked into the jail as "homeless," but investigators were able to locate and notify his family of his death Sunday morning, Burgess said.

The last inmate death at the jail was nearly four years ago—on Aug. 4, 2016, Burgess said.
