Cases climb to 756 in county

<p>Staff Reports</p><p>Local health officials on Wednesday reported 15 more COVID-19 cases in Johnson County, bringing to 756 the number of cases in the county. No new deaths were reported.</p><p>The Indiana State Department of Health on Wednesday said the number of positive cases for COVID-19 in the state has risen to 21,870 following the emergence of 837 more cases.</p><p>That’s the second-highest single-day increase in cases reported by the department since the beginning of the pandemic. The ISDH reported 949 new cases on April 20—a number that included an outbreak of more than 400 cases in Cass County.</p><p>The state reported 526 new cases on Tuesday, 574 on Monday, 638 on Sunday, 665 on Saturday, 795 on Friday and 653 on Thursday.</p><p>The state said Wednesday that the cumulative death toll in the state rose to 1,264, up from 1,213 the previous day—an increase of 51.</p><p>More than 91% of the total deaths involve those who are age 60 or older. More than 74% of those who have died are older than 70. Men account for 53% of the deaths.</p><p>The state reported that 120,496 people have been tested so far, up from 115,834 in Sunday’s report—an increase of 4,662. That’s the second-highest number of new tests included in the daily report, trailing 4,718 tests on May 3.</p><p>The ISDH said the test numbers reflect only those tests reported to the department and the numbers should not be characterized as a comprehensive total.</p><p>New positive cases, deaths and tests have occurred over a range of dates but were reported to the department in the previous day.</p><p>The department reported the state’s first case on March 6.</p><p>Nearby Indianapolis reported 6,730 cumulative cases—up from 6,419 the previous day, an increase of 311 cases.</p><p>The state reported 390 cumulative deaths in the city, up from 374 in Tuesday’s report. The state said 30,485 people have been tested.</p><p>As for surrounding counties, Hamilton had 882 positive cases; Hendricks 883; Boone 207; Hancock 236; Madison 462; Morgan 176; and Shelby 241.</p><p>Every Indiana county has at least two cases.</p><p>The department said 40.9% of the state’s intensive care unit beds were still available. About 19.2% are being used by COVID-19 patients.</p><p>The department also said 79.4% of the state’s ventilators were available. About 9% were being used for COVID-19 patients.</p><p>Health officials say Indiana has far more coronavirus cases—possibly thousands more—than those indicated by the number of tests.</p><p>As of Wednesday morning, 1.2 million cases had been reported in the United States, with 71,079 deaths, according to a running tally maintained by health researchers at Johns Hopkins University &amp;amp; Medicine. More than 189,700 people have recovered.</p><p>Nearly 3.7 million cases have been reported globally, with 258,160 deaths.
