Center Grove responds to photo of students gathering unsafely

A now-viral photo of a group of Center Grove High School students gathering Wednesday on school grounds has drawn the ire of school administrators and fellow students.

The photo, which was published in “The Trojaneer,” the high school’s student newspaper, shows about 50 students grouped together closely, holding various signs displaying messages such as “Quarentine [SIC] sucks,” “Little kid day 2020,” “First day of school” and “CGHS 2020.”

“The Trojaneer” published a piece by its yearbook editor rejecting the actions of those students.

“The group of people, against the wishes of the school, state and healthcare professionals across the country, met without masks and practices zero social distancing guidelines. As a senior, I’m ashamed of my class,” the article said. “Students posed for pictures, promoted this behavior on social media and most of all created a perfect breeding ground for the virus.”

Center Grove administrators were also unhappy with the actions of the students, spokesperson Stacy Conrad said in an email.

“As a school district, Center Grove does not authorize nor do we condone any events or gatherings that violate the guidelines established by the governor, (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention) and state and local health departments,” Conrad said. “The administrators are disappointed that Center Grove students chose to ignore these guidelines.”

Center Grove schools announced plans this week to hold its graduation July 11 at Ray Skillman Stadium.
