Walmart opens two local COVID-19 testing sites

Walmart opened six drive-thru COVID-19 testing sites Friday, including one in Greenwood and one on the southside.

Walmart began a partnership with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in March to provide testing sites in the store’s parking lots. The company’s goal was to have at least 100 sites across the nation by the end of May, and now six are in Indiana, according to a Walmart news release.

The testing sites are at the following locations:

  • Greenwood Walmart, 1133 N .Emerson Ave., Greenwood
  • Indianapolis Walmart, 7245 U.S. 31 South, Indianapolis
  • Indianapolis Walmart, 3221 W. 86th St., Indianapolis
  • Indianapolis Walmart, 7325 N. Keystone Ave., Indianapolis
  • Camby Walmart, 8191 Upland Bend, Camby
  • Paoli Walmart, 735 N. Gospel St., Paoli

The tests are only available to individuals who meet the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s guidelines, as well as local and state guidelines, regarding who should be tested. Those groups include people with prominent COVID-19 symptoms, those at-risk for the illness and first responders, the news release said.

Walmart partnered with Texas-based eTrueNorth labs to provide the testing. The lab is in charge of screening patients, scheduling appointments and returning results, and Walmart is just providing its parking lots and pharmacy staff to help.

Those who want to be tested have to sign up for an appointment online at DoINeedaCOVID19Test.com. Walk-ins will not be accepted. The sites conduct testing from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

All the tests are a self-administered nasal swab. Patients pull up to a Walmart parking lot and remain in their cars while a Walmart pharmacist hands them a swab test in a sealed bag. Individuals receiving the test must also wear a mask. The pharmacist will watch drive-thru patients perform the test to make sure it is done correctly, according to the news release.

The test will then be sent to an eTrueNorth lab, and results are expected back in three to five days, the news release said.

All tests are free, and Walmart is not making any profit off the testing sites, according to the news release.
