Greenwood council considers tax break for doctor’s office

A Greenwood doctor’s office is expanding, and they’re asking the city for a tax break to do it.

Hector Family Medicine, 521 E. County Line Road, Suite G, just south of Smock Golf Course, is building an additional medical office building on Airport Parkway, west of the Indy South Greenwood Airport.

Dr. Andrew Hector, owner of the family practice, told the Greenwood City Council Monday night that a property tax break would help relieve some financial burdens that arose during development. The project is costing more than he initially expected due to infrastructure needs, such as getting water, storm sewer and sanitary sewer to the site, he said.

Hector Family Medicine opened in 2006 in Greenwood. The practice specializes in low-cost primary care for those who have no insurance, or poor coverage, Hector said.

"We don’t take insurance, and it’s actually less expensive for people that are stuck with no insurance or high deductibles. It’s kind of a unique practice model in this area," he said.

The office also does cosmetic laser procedures.

The expansion is a $1.5 million investment, according to city documents.

The Greenwood Redevelopment Commission approved the $130,000 real property tax abatement last week. Now, it’s up to the city council. The council reviewed the abatement Monday night, and will vote on it at its December meetings.

If approved by the council, the developer would not pay any real property taxes on the new building for the first year, but would pay an additional 10% each year over a 10-year period, eventually paying full property taxes, city documents show.
