Quarantine knocks Franklin girls out of county tourney

Technically, the Franklin girls basketball team is still undefeated, but the Grizzly Cubs took a big loss on Wednesday.

A positive COVID-19 case within the program has resulted in the entire varsity team being placed in quarantine, forcing its withdrawal from the Johnson County tournament.

The announcement came just hours after Franklin (4-0) beat Greenwood in its opening-round game. Senior guard Kyra Baker got the word in the morning and was devastated.

“Kuryn (Brunson) and I have talked basically all day,” Baker said, “and we’re disappointed because we’ve been looking forward to this year for the past three years, really. So it’s kind of a letdown, but we’re trying to stay positive and look forward to sectionals and the rest of the season.”

Though the case impacts the entire roster, the person who tested positive is not a varsity player and was not in attendance for Tuesday night’s game, so the Woodmen will not be impacted in any way. The Grizzly Cubs, meanwhile, can not practice together until Nov. 28; athletic director Bill Doty was still awaiting official word from the IHSAA on whether they can play their next scheduled game, which would be that day against Perry Meridian, but the hope is that they’ll be allowed to.

Despite the interruption, Baker is confident that Franklin will be able to keep its early-season momentum going.

“I think we’ll be okay,” she said. “We have a lot of determination on our team, so there’s no doubt in my mind that we’ll be working out still (individually). … I think we’ll be ready.”

Meanwhile, the rest of the county tournament will go on with only a slight change to the schedule. Host Whiteland, slated to play its semifinal game against Franklin, gets a bye into Saturday’s championship game, which will still be played at 7 p.m. at Whiteland.

Center Grove plays Greenwood Christian in the lone remaining semifinal game tonight at 6 p.m. The Trojans will now host that game.

While they wait, the Warriors will fill the unexpected hole in their schedule with a 7 p.m. home game against Noblesville tonight.
