Franklin girls easily outpace Woodmen

Few things invite the potential for complacency more than a 50-point victory earlier in the season.

That was the dilemma facing the Franklin girls basketball team Friday night as it prepared to host Greenwood in a Mid-State Conference contest. The Grizzly Cubs, ranked eighth in Class 4A, moved to 9-0 with a 77-29 victory.

The same squads met in November on the same hardwood with the Cubs prevailing, 75-25.

Franklin junior guard Kuryn Brunson led all scorers with 24 points before checking out of the game for good with 6:34 remaining in the final quarter. Senior guard Kyra Baker added 15 points with freshman forward Erica Buening scoring 10 off the bench for the Cubs, who remain tied with Martinsville atop the league standings at 3-0.
[sc:text-divider text-divider-title="Story continues below gallery" ]Click here to purchase photos from this gallery
Greenwood, which dropped to 1-7 and 0-3, received a solid effort from senior forward Jenna Sawyer, who just missed a double-double with 18 points and eight rebounds. The Woodmen played without junior forward Quinn Kelly.

“I definitely think that’s a coach’s fear of making sure you’re engaged,” Franklin coach Josh Sabol said. “I felt like in the first quarter, it took a little while for us to get going. Once we got in that second and third quarter, we started to ramp it up and play our way.”

The Grizzly Cubs were leading, 7-0, before the Woodmen took their first field goal attempt. Franklin held a 12-3 advantage after one quarter, further took control with a 35-13 halftime lead and raced to a comfortable 58-19 lead through three.

Franklin made 29 of 60 field goal tries (48.3%) compared to Greenwood’s 9 of 38 (23.7%). The Grizzly Cubs crashed the glass for a 33-22 rebounding advantage, led by Brunson, Thompson and senior forward Lauren Sandrock corralling five apiece.

Early on, Greenwood’s defensive pressure was a key component in Franklin’s sluggish start. Offensively, coach Justin Bennett’s club simply didn’t have nearly the amount of options as the Grizzly Cubs.

“We just want to try to come out and improve every day,” Bennett said. “We had a chance to come out and play against a good Franklin team, and we wanted to make sure we established ourselves defensively. They can shoot the ball, and they are a really good team, and I thought we did a good job of coming out and sticking to our game plan by being in the gaps and challenging shooters.

“Us missing Quinn, we needed Jenna to step up in a big way and she did. She was really aggressive, and we talked to her about being a leader, and not just by being vocal. We wanted her to be a leader by example, too.”

Both teams are back in action today, with Franklin traveling to Shelbyville and the Woodmen staying in conference to host Plainfield.
