A man died this weekend after his car crashed into a Greenwood pond.
Multiple crews responded to a report of a car in a pond about 3:20 p.m. Saturday, near State Road 135 and Main Street in Greenwood, said Jeremy Pell, chief of the White River Township Fire Department.
Local officials were still not releasing the victim’s name Sunday.
The first crew on scene, as well as witnesses, attempted to rescue the driver, but were unsuccessful. An Indianapolis Fire Department dive team arrived about 3:30 p.m. and pulled the man from the water within two minutes, according to the department. He was taken to an area hospital where he died, Pell said.
Fire crews were assisted by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office and Greenwood Police Department, which is leading the investigation.
It remained unclear Sunday why the car went into the pond.
“The accident investigators are working on it, but it could be days to weeks if they come up with anything,” said Matt Fillenwarth, assistant police chief.
