Vaccination rates lower in local small towns, data shows

Those in Greenwood and White River Township are more likely to be fully vaccinated than those in smaller Johnson County communities such as Edinburgh, Whiteland and New Whiteland.

The data, which comes from the Indiana State Department of Health, breaks down vaccination rates by zip code.

Zip code 46162, which is mostly farmland between east central Johnson County and west central Shelby County, has the highest percentage of residents who are at least partially vaccinated at 56%. About a third of its population is fully vaccinated. But the data comes with a caveat: just 277 people live there.

Of the other 10 zip codes that touch at least a portion of Johnson County, all have at least 3,600 people. Generally, the northern and central zip codes of Johnson County fare better than their counterparts to the south.

The glaring exception is zip code 46184, which covers Whiteland and New Whiteland. There, about one in six residents are fully vaccinated, less than half the rate of zip code 46259, which covers the southside of Indianapolis east of Interstate 65 and northeastern Johnson County. There, about 36% of people are fully vaccinated and almost half are partially vaccinated.

Bargersville, Greenwood and White River Township have some of the highest vaccination rates in the county. In zip code 46106, which includes Bargersville, more than 30% of the about 5,000 residents are vaccinated.

The figure is about the same in northwest Greenwood and northern White River Township. In zip code 46142, three in 10 residents are vaccinated.

More than a quarter of residents in the most populous zip code in the county — 46143 — which covers the rest of Greenwood and the Center Grove area, are fully vaccinated.

The zip codes that include Prince’s Lakes, Trafalgar and Franklin all have similar vaccination rates. The zip codes — 46164, 46181 and 46131 — all have between 31.9% and 32.6% of their populations partially vaccinated, and between 22.3% and 23.3% fully vaccinated.

The three zip codes that include Whiteland, New Whiteland, Edinburgh and southwestern Johnson County have among the lowest vaccination rates in the county. Less than 30% are partially vaccinated, and less than 20% are fully vaccinated.

Edinburgh’s primary zip code, 46124, has the lowest vaccination rate in the county. There, less than a quarter of residents are partially vaccinated and less than 16% of people are fully vaccinated.
