Police: Man injures two Franklin officers

A call about a suspicious person near a Franklin pizzeria ended in a random backyard where the suspect jumped on a trampoline and injured two officers.

Cody Allen Henry Davis, 26, will be arrested on a Level 5 felony charge of attempting to disarm a law enforcement officer, two Level 6 felony counts of battery on a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor charges of resisting law enforcement, criminal mischief, disorderly conduct and public intoxication.

About 9:52 a.m. Tuesday, Franklin police were called to a fast-food restaurant off Morton Street in Franklin. Davis crossed Morton Street and ran into the caller’s car, which was stopped at a red light, according to a Franklin Police Department report.

An officer saw Davis walking northbound on the west side of Morton Street and tried to stop him. The Franklin resident looked at the officer and kept walking away, according to the report.

The officer followed Davis in his car, repeatedly demanding that he stop. Davis fled, hopping over a guardrail and running toward homes on North Main Street, near the creek, the report said.

Davis kept running, eventually hopping a chain-link fence in the 1900 block of Lochry Road. When police arrived, they found Davis yelling at a woman at a nearby residence to call the police, according to the report.

Police, in full uniform, asked Davis to stop yelling because they were police and were already there. Davis disregarded that command and started jumping on a trampoline, the report said.

Officers tried to calm him down for about three minutes, then surrounded the trampoline while he continued to ignore commands, according to the report.

An officer climbed onto the trampoline and discharged his taser. Davis jumped off, the taser probes embedded in his ankle and hip, the report said.

Three officers gathered around Davis, trying to calm him down and restrain him. Davis continued to struggle. He punched one officer in the face and kicked another in the face. Both officers were treated for minor abrasions, according to the report.

During the struggle, Davis looked at and grasped an officer’s taser, which was strapped to his tactical vest, the report said.

Police eventually handcuffed and sedated him. He was taken to the Johnson Memorial Hospital where he was admitted due to an underlying condition unrelated to the incident, according to the report.

While at the hospital, Davis told police he was under the influence of methamphetamine and whiskey.

Davis had not been booked into the Johnson County jail by press time Tuesday, but Franklin police plan to transport him there once he is discharged from the hospital, police said.
