Health department to make extra vaccines available

An extra allotment of the Moderna vaccine is on its way to Johnson County, and the county health department will have additional appointments available at its new vaccine clinic at Compass Park.

The roughly 2,800 extra doses are part of a push by state officials for county health departments to launch their own mass vaccination clinics, said Betsy Swearingen, health department director.

The local health department decided it could distribute the vaccines faster by simply expanding its schedule to give more doses per day for the next two weeks, which requires less planning and staff, Swearingen said. The clinic distributes about 1,400 vaccinations a week with hopes to increase that to 2,600 a week permanently in the future, she said.

The additional appointments are available now on ourshot.in.gov for any individual 18 or older. Swearingen encourages those who have later appointments to cancel and get their first dose sooner.

Second dose appointments will be scheduled on-site, as the Moderna vaccine requires a booster shot for full immunity.

The county’s new clinic at Compass Park — which is separate from the clinic at Johnson Memorial Hospital — got off to a great start last week, Swearingen said.

The new clinic had a soft opening Monday, and gave 240 shots Tuesday and 300 shots Wednesday.

The clinic is running efficiently and has short wait times. That is not expected to change in the next two weeks, she said.

The clinic is open for vaccinations by appointment only from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday, and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday.

To date, more than 31,500 Johnson County residents are fully vaccinated — that’s about a quarter of the eligible population, according to the Indiana State Department of Health. More than 44,000 have received at least one dose of a vaccine.

More than 1.3 million Hoosiers are now fully vaccinated — that’s also about a quarter of the state’s eligible population — and nearly 3.3 million have received at least one dose, data shows.
