FCS hires new food services director

Franklin Community Schools hired a new food services director.

The school board at its April 26 meeting named Elizabeth Edwards, a registered dietician, the district’s next Director of Food Services.

Edwards previously served for six years as the Nutrition Program Director at the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, where she developed a new school nutrition program for five schools, according to a Franklin schools news release. Prior to that, she was the registered dietician for Decatur and Wayne Township Schools in Indianapolis.

“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to step into the role of Food Service Director with Franklin Community Schools,” Edwards said in a statement. “As a registered dietitian, I am enthusiastic about innovating and bringing fresh options to school food service. I’m excited to learn more about the (agriculture) program, and exploring ways to incorporate some of this program into our foodservice operation.”

School officials say they are excited about what Edwards can bring to the table. Nutrition initiatives started under retiring food services director Jill Overton are expected to continue and grow under Edwards’ leadership, the news release said.

“Elizabeth is passionate about student nutrition and focuses on menu quality including from-scratch items using fresh ingredients and local produce,” Director of Operations Jeff Sewell said in a statement. “Community partnerships and farm-to-school fresh ingredients have been hallmarks of Franklin Schools’ Food Services program.”
