We are Americans who stand as one

To the Editor:

We are all Americans. It is a simple statement and a simple fact. Being American is a point of enormous pride for us all. We are a raucous people, full of unbridled energy and creativity. We look up to no other power on earth, and while we contentiously rub against each other, we come together when threatened and become a power unlike any other. We have won wars and lost battles, and we fight amongst ourselves with undisciplined fury on occasion. Still, we will allow no one to come between us, for we are Americans and we stand together.

There is no “typical” American. It is our strength that we are all different, all unique. It is the source of our independent spirit, a spirit that has propelled us to unparalleled success. This Americanism that we treasure was a dream born in the minds and experiences of a few brilliant people, the Founding Fathers. It was shaky at first, and the dream was bigger than the reality, but we have marched forward together, slowly striving to reach the pinnacle of the Founding Father’s dream.

We are not there yet, and we cannot all agree on which road to take, but we are determined to ratchet success upon success, so that someday our grandchildren and their grandchildren will have moved closer, ever closer, to the American dream of freedom, equality and justice for all.

We are all Americans, and we stand as one.
