High school football: Week 8 preview

Greenwood (2-5) at Franklin (2-5)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Live video: IHSAATV.org/MidState/FranklinCommunity

Radio: KORN Country (100.3 FM)

Recent history: The Woodmen rolled to a 41-7 victory last season, avenging Franklin’s win by the same score in 2019.

Sagarin ratings: Greenwood 52.83 (118th in Indiana), Franklin 63.85 (82nd)

Players to watch: Greenwood — QB Brock Riddle, RB/LB Gavin Ruppert, RB Noah Apgar, TE Carter Campbell, DE Dylan Mayhew; Franklin — QB Clay Pinnick, RB Titus Phillips, WR Max Clark, OL/DL Reece Byerly, DB Beau Baker

What to look for: Both of these teams have run hot and cold this season, so it’ll be interesting to see which version of each shows up tonight. Each side has developed some new offensive weapons as the year progressed, with Riddle emerging as a passing threat for the Woodmen and Phillips establishing himself as a workhorse in the Franklin backfield. After an exchange of blowout wins the last two years, expect this one to be a bit more closely contested.

Lawrence North (5-1) at Center Grove (7-0)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Live video: IHSAATV.org/CGSportsNetwork

Recent history: The Trojans rallied from a 13-0 halftime deficit to post a 28-13 win last season, extending their series win streak to 15 games.

Sagarin ratings: Lawrence North 87.85 (18th), Center Grove 110.04 (first)

Players to watch: Lawrence North — QB Montez Jones, RB Ali Richardson, WR Omar Cooper, LB Josh Noble, LB Romaro Warren; Center Grove — QB Tayven Jackson, RB Drew Wheat, TE Shane Bennett, DL Caden Curry, DL James Schott

What to look for: The Wildcats have bounced back nicely from a lopsided loss to Carmel, beating Ben Davis and Warren Central to keep itself alive in the MIC title chase. A Lawrence North win tonight would create a three-way logjam atop the league. Indiana University recruit Cooper will test the Trojans’ secondary, but will sophomore Jones have enough time to find him? How well the young quarterback handles Center Grove’s ferocious pass rush could determine how competitive this game is.

Plainfield (3-4) at Whiteland (3-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Live video: IHSAATV.org/MidState/Mooresville

Recent history: The Warriors have won nine of 10 and three in a row, including a 49-13 rout last year.

Sagarin ratings: Plainfield 61.33 (90th), Whiteland 71.94 (52nd)

Players to watch: Plainfield — QB Carsen Melvin, WR Noah Hessong, WR Cael Vanderbush, DL Isaac Masquelier, LB Garrett Kane; Whiteland — QB Kevin Denham, RB Peyton Emberton, RB Gunnar Hicks, TE/DL Max Sullivan, LB Daniel Adams

What to look for: It’s October, which usually means the Warriors have flipped a switch and turned into a postseason contender. If last week’s surprising win at Mooresville is any indication, it may well have happened again. Whiteland shackled the Pioneers’ explosive offense; now it faces another dynamic scoring outfit in the Quakers. Will we see a repeat of last week from the defense — and can the Warriors’ injury-ravaged offense continue to move the chains and score points?

Indian Creek (2-5) at Sullivan (5-2)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Recent history: The Braves’ 35-28 triumph last fall was its first win in three tries against the Golden Arrows.

Sagarin ratings: Indian Creek 32.11 (203rd), Sullivan 68.03 (65th)

Players to watch: Indian Creek — QB Aidan Neathery, RB/LB Brandon Murray, OL/DL Daniel Foster, LB James Kelly, LB Wyatt Reason; Sullivan — QB Rowdy Adams, RB/LB William Newby, WR/DB Luke Adams, WR/DB Randy Kelley, OL/DL Jack Ridgway

What to look for: A Braves team already struggling through its worst season since 2000 took another hit with the sudden departure of head coach Steve Spinks on Monday. How will Indian Creek respond? Will the playbook change much under interim coach Dan Rector — and perhaps more importantly, what about the mental and emotional side of things? Add to that a Sullivan team averaging 40 points during its current four-game win streak, and the Braves have got a lot to deal with.

Rock Creek Academy (1-5) at Edinburgh (4-3)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Recent history: The Lancers have won both meetings comfortably, including a 42-0 shutout victory last season.

Sagarin ratings: Rock Creek minus-4.01 (300th), Edinburgh 27.18 (220th)

Players to watch: Rock Creek — RB/LB Kendrick Peyton, DL Jaleb Treat; Edinburgh — QB/LB Riley Palmeter, RB/LB Jarrett Turner, RB/LB Lennon DeLoach, WR/DB Caleb Dewey, WR/DB Colin Richardson

What to look for: After a tough two-point loss to Traders Point Christian last week, the Lancers should get back on the winning track tonight against the Lions, who have dropped their last three games by a combined 160-8 score. A team that has struggled to score most of the season might not be equipped to deal with Edinburgh’s record-breaking aerial attack; Dewey and Turner have caught a combined 93 passes. A victory would give the Lancers just their second five-win season in 28 years.

Roncalli (7-0) at Cincinnati Elder (3-4)

Kickoff: 7 p.m. tonight

Radio: CBS Sports 1430, roncallimedianetwork.com

Recent history: The teams haven’t met since 2002, when Elder picked up a 45-7 win.

Sagarin ratings: Roncalli 96.29 (12th), Elder N/A

Players to watch: Roncalli — QB Aidan Leffler, RB Caden Gore, WR Kyle Lockard, LB Tyson Garrett, DB Michael Hegwood; Elder — QB Ben Hambleton, WR/P Drew Ramsey, WR Andrew Harp, DB Zack Gutekunst

What to look for: The Panthers, normally one of the marquee programs in Ohio, have had some struggles against a rugged schedule featuring several Midwestern powerhouses, but they’re a potent passing team that has some momentum coming off of a wild 59-58 win against Archbishop Moeller. The Royals have been largely dominant this season, but tonight represents a venture into the unknown. How will the team perform against an unfamiliar foe after a long bus ride?
