Dorothy Jean Gudeman

Dorothy (Dottie) Jean Gudeman, 93, of Greenwood, Indiana, died peacefully with her family at her side on November 8, 2021.

Dottie was born May 26, 1928, in Cissna Park, Illinois. She was the daughter of the late Carl and Erna Barth. Dottie taught at the elementary school level after graduating from Illinois State teacher’s college in Bloomington, IL. On June 5, 1949, she married Edward Gudeman of East Lynn, Illinois and they were happily married for 61 years.

After farming in Benton County Indiana for over 11 years, Ed and Dottie and their 5 children moved to Frankfort, Indiana, for 7 years and then moved to Crawfordsville, Indiana. While in Crawfordsville, Dottie owned “Initially…” a monogramming and engraving gift store that included a catalog service. Dottie and Ed retired to Bloomington, Indiana, as lifelong fans and supporters of Indiana University, where their 5 children had been students. While in Bloomington, Dottie and Ed enjoyed attending athletic events, concerts, and they were active in the First United Methodist Church.

Dottie was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She especially enjoyed watching and appreciating her children and grandchildren’s activities and accomplishments. Dottie also enjoyed cooking, watching sports, especially IU basketball, and playing fast paced, competitive euchre games. Dottie loved keeping in contact with family and friends throughout her life by writing letters and sending cards.

Dottie is preceded in death by her husband Ed. She is survived by her 5 children, Dr. Steve Gudeman of Lake Wylie, SC, Beth Gudeman of Lexington, KY, Lynn Foster of John’s Creek, GA, Lori (Eugene Mszar) Gudeman of Manassas, VA, and Dr. Scott (Nancy) Gudeman of Greenwood, IN, 16 grandchildren and 9 great grandchildren. Dottie is survived by her sister Betty Moderhack of Austin, TX and sister-in-law Harlean Barth of Chicago, IL. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Edward Barth and granddaughter Abigail Gudeman.

The family of Dottie would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to her friend Diann Munn, Dr. Todd Dudley, Brookdale Hospice, and the staff of the Independence Village in Greenwood, IN for their nearly 5 years of caring and support to Dottie while a resident.

A private memorial service will be planned.
