College notebook: Willham wins weight class at tourney

Indiana University wrestler Nick Willham won the 197-pound weight class at the Cleveland State Open. The former Greenwood athlete is now 8-1 on the season entering the Hoosiers’ next competition, the Ken Kraft Midlands Championships Dec. 29-30 in suburban Chicago.

Wabash College senior Ethan Pine won the mile in a time of 4 minutes, 29.5 seconds, as the Little Giants opened their indoor track and field season by hosting the Horace Turner Invitational.

Indian Creek

Marian freshman Luci Woodrum finished ninth in the 800-meter run in 2:37.45 at the Indiana Tech indoor track and field invitational.

Bethel senior guard Jared DeHart had 22 points, six assists and two steals in a 106-79 victory over Judson. DeHart then provided the Pilots 27 points, six rebounds and five assists in a 92-79 loss at Union (Kentucky) and 14 points, four boards and four assists in a 90-76 win at Reinhardt (Georgia).

Center Grove

Kansas State safety Russ Yeast was named second team All-Big 12 Conference in football, finishing his lone season with the Wildcats with three interceptions and a league-high 13 passes defended.

Louisville sophomore sprinter Kiyah Yeast posted a personal-best time of 7.59 seconds to place third in the 60-meter dash at her team’s Cardinal Classic.

Freshman Taylor Jarosinski, a pole vaulter at Indiana University, took second in her specialty at the Hoosier Open, an indoor track and field meet hosted by her team.

UIndy runner Gabrielle Harrell took part in the victorious 4×400 relay team as the Greyhounds opened their indoor track and field season at home.

Purdue women’s basketball defeated Denver, 101-68, in a game that included both Boilermakers senior guard Cassidy Hardin (a career-high 25 points) and Pioneers freshman backup Mary Wilson, who had two points and a steal. Denver’s swing through Indiana also included a 100-94 win at Butler in four overtimes in which Wilson scored a point.

Indiana Wesleyan guard Spencer Piercefield had 22 points and six assists as the Wildcats won at Roosevelt, 76-63.

Junior Trayce Jackson-Davis finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and three blocks to lead Indiana men’s basketball past visiting Merrimack, 81-49.

University of Indianapolis point guard Ben Nicoson had three points, two assists and a rebound in the squad’s 86-41 downing of St. Mary-of-the-Woods.

Whiteland

Lipscomb freshman Bella Jackson placed second in the high jump at the Hoosier Open, an indoor track and field meet hosted by Indiana University, with a school-record effort of 1.72 meters (5 feet, 7 inches).

Indiana East freshman sprinter Tristan Thomas was named his team’s Alpha Wolf of the Meet after taking part in the long jump, 60- and 200-meter dashes at the Indiana Tech indoor track and field Invitational. Marian freshman Gabi Allen placed 10th in the 200-meter dash in 26.41 seconds and was 10th in the hurdles.

Franklin College forward Carter Crowe had two points and a team-best 11 rebounds in the Grizzly men’s 76-65 win at Manchester.

Senior guard Sidney Crowe had four points, two boards and two assists as St. Francis women’s basketball downed Governors State in overtime, 63-60.

Senior Sam Barnett had a time of 1:29.60 for Marian men’s track and field at the Indiana Tech indoor invitational.

Bayleigh Torrance had seven points, six boards and a steal as the Franklin College women’s basketball squad won at Manchester, 76-54.
