IHSAA approves ‘emerging sports’

The Indiana High School Athletic Association approved boys volleyball and girls wrestling became the first two sports recognized as “emerging sports,” paving the way for eventual recognition as state-sanctioned sports. There are currently 42 schools with boys volleyball club teams, including Center Grove, Franklin and Roncalli, while 113 different schools were represented by at least one female wrestler this year.

At least half of the IHSAA’s 407 member schools must be participating in a sport for it to become officially recognized and an IHSAA state tournament be sponsored. (The lone exception is girls gymnastics, which has had a state tournament for 50 years despite only 69 schools currently fielding teams.)
