Students must apply for 21st Century Scholarship by Thursday

Students in seventh and eighth grade must apply for the 21st Century Scholars program no later than Thursday.

The program, administered by the Indiana Commission for Higher Education, is Indiana’s early college promise program. The program provides up to four years of undergraduate tuition at Indiana colleges and universities for those who qualify. Since the program’s inception in 1990, more than 45,000 students have earned a degree through the scholars program, with more than 100,000 students between seventh grade and senior year of college currently enrolled, according to a news release from the commission.

Students in the program go to college more often than their peers, with 81% of students in the program enrolling in higher education, compared to 53% of their Hoosier peers. The program is underutilized, however. Despite 40% of students qualifying for the program, less than half of those eligible enroll, according to the release.

Students who qualify for free or reduced price lunch are typically eligible for the program.
