The Meridian Street and Surina Way intersection is temporarily a four-way stop to ease traffic flow as work on Greenwood’s Main Street and Madison Avenue Streetscape project continues. The intersection was previously a two-way stop with Surina Way traffic stopping and no stop for Meridian Street traffic.
The change will increase safety on the detour route for construction project, which has added traffic to Surina Way and Meridian Street, according to a resolution unanimously passed by the city’s Board of Public Works and Safety on Wednesday.
The detour is for a water pipe replacement project by Indiana American Water which has closed the westbound lanes of Main Street between Meridian Street and Madison Avenue through August. Madison Avenue is closed to through traffic at Surina Way and the detour route leads traffic through Market Plaza or Surina Way on either side of the road.
An all-way stop was in place prior to Wednesday, but to make it enforceable, the board needed to modify the city code to establish the intersection as a temporarily all-way stop, said Mark St. Johns, city engineer.
Greenwood’s planning and engineering departments will also be investigating whether the all-way stop should be made permanent. That would require a full engineering study to be conducted, St. Johns said.
