One dead, three injured in Monday delivery truck accident

A Carmel man was fatally injured and two other delivery employees were hospitalized following a crash on Olive Branch Road Monday morning.

Alexander J. Colmenares Fernandez, 22, was fatally injured in the crash, according to the accident report from Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The crash occurred at approximately 9:10 a.m. in the 3000 block of west Olive Branch Road, west of State Road 135, according to a press release from the sheriff’s office.

Upon arrival, deputies found a delivery truck in the eastbound lanes of Olive Branch Road. It appears a delivery from Home Depot was being made at a nearby residence. Three workers were unloading an item from the delivery truck, when a pickup truck heading eastbound struck the rear of the delivery truck, the release says.

The impact of the accident pinned Fernandez between the two trucks. Fernandez was pronounced dead at the scene, the release says.

The other two delivery workers and the pickup truck driver were injured and transported to Eskenazi and Methodist hospitals for treatment, the release says.

The pickup truck driver told deputies he was unable to see the delivery truck stopped in the road because the sun was blinding him. The sheriff’s office doesn’t believe intoxication or unsafe driving were a factor in the accident, the release says.

“It appears to be a tragic accident due to difficulty seeing in the rising sunlight,” said Andrew Barnhart, chief deputy.
