Greenwood man dead after 2nd shooting in 3 days

A Greenwood man is dead following a Tuesday evening shooting in the 1100 block of Westminster Court.

The shooting at Westminster Apartments and Townhomes is the second in three days in Greenwood, following the mass shooting at the Greenwood Park Mall Sunday. The complex is also located just across U.S. 31 from the mall

Jason Grider, 48, was fatally shot at the apartment complex following a fight at around 8:07 p.m. Tuesday. He was transported to Sidney and Lois Eskenazi Hospital where he was pronounced deceased, according to a media release from Greenwood police.

Upon arrival, officers located an adult male with a single gunshot wound lying in the street. Witnesses told police Grider had been involved in an altercation with four Black male juveniles prior to the shooting, police say.

The males fled the scene after the shooting. Witnesses at the scene said the juveniles ran through a hole in the fence toward the neighboring Polo Run Apartments, located to the south.

Later, detectives located two of the juveniles at an apartment in Polo Run. The juveniles were questioned at the Greenwood Police Department and later released, police say.

Detectives are still pursuing leads and this is an on-going investigation, police say.

With the trauma of the mall mass shooting Sunday that was just a block from their home, resident Raquel Reyes said seeing a shooting in her own neighborhood made it even more troubling.

“It is very scary. I never would have imagined this would happen so close to me,” Reyes said. “This is nuts. The fact that people keep resorting this gun (stuff) is insane.”

Coincidently, when Greenwood police searched Polo Run for the juveniles, they were returning there for second time in two days. Early Monday morning, Greenwood Police, along with the Federal Bureau of Investigation, had searched the apartment of the gunman from the mall shooting. He had resided in Polo Run, before he was killed in the mall by an armed civilian Sunday.
