Woman airlifted after Sunday crash into Camp Atterbury

Two people were taken to the hospital, one via LifeLine, following a car accident near Camp Atterbury Sunday night.

The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a crash report just after 8 p.m. Sunday at the intersection of Old Hospital Road and Stone Arch Drive in Nineveh Township.

Upon arrival, the deputy found a Ford Mustang laying on its passenger side off the road south of the intersection. The car had gone through a chain link fence and over a berm inside the Camp Atterbury property, according to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report.

Both passengers, a man and a woman, were still inside the vehicle and unconscious. The roof was eventually moved enough to extract them, the report says.

The man “appeared to be in a great deal of pain” and not all of his injuries were obvious, according to the report. In the passenger seat, the woman’s arm was stuck under the car while first responders extracted her. She had a severe laceration on her arm above the elbow, the report says.

The woman was airlifted by LifeLine to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis and is in stable condition as of Monday. The man was transported by ambulance to an area hospital, and his condition is unknown at this time.

The intersection where the crash occurred is a T-intersection with a narrow bridge connected to Old Hospital Road, according to the report. There is a stop sign there, but there were no visible skid marks. At some point, the car left the road, became airborne, struck the fence while in the air and landed 20 feet from the road inside Camp Atterbury, the report says.

A witness at the scene spoke to deputies when they arrived. They said they did not see the accident, but heard what sounded like “engines revving and motorcycles racing” before the crash.
