College notebook: Jean fires 66 for Bearcats

University of Cincinnati men’s golfer Sam Jean matched his career-low score of 66 to help the Bearcats finish in a tie for sixth out of 18 teams at the Badger Invitational in Wisconsin. The former Center Grove golfer placed third individually.

Center Grove

Ball State sophomore running back Carson Steele carried the football 26 times for 147 yards and a touchdown in his team’s 37-30 home loss to Western Michigan. Steele also had one catch for 18 yards.

DePauw sophomore Trent Veith made two catches for a total of 16 yards as the Tigers shut out Anderson, 55-0. Defensive back Dane Young made four tackles for DePauw.

Ohio State freshman defensive end Caden Curry produced the first four tackles of tackles of his college career, including one for a loss, as the Buckeyes beat Arkansas State, 45-12.

Senior defensive back Riley Roberts recorded five tackles for Rose-Hulman in its 24-23 home loss to Trine.

Wabash College defensive lineman Cade Lansdell made four tackles in the team’s 56-12 loss to visiting North Central.

Junior middle blocker Jamie Brown had seven kills and a dig for Indiana State in its five-set win over Campbell at the Bluegrass Battle in Kentucky. Brown had three kills in a loss to the host Wildcats. At the same tourney, Wisconsin setter Madison Hammill had nine assists and two digs in a win over the host Wildcats and 12 assists and eight digs in a 3-0 sweep of Campbell.

Ball State freshman Katie Egenolf had four kills and two digs as the host Cardinals defeated Green Bay in five sets at its own tournament.

Senior Trey Thixton won two matches at both No. 1 doubles and No. 4 singles as Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis won matches over Marian and Mt. Vernon Nazarene.

Hanover freshman Lauren Todd finished 22nd overall as the women’s cross country team placed fifth of six teams at its own invitational.

Franklin

Setter Brooke Phillips completed play with a total of 20 digs as IUPUI volleyball won two of its three matches at the Bellarmine Invitational.

Ball State linebacker Clayton Coll made six tackles in the Cardinals’ 37-30 loss to visiting Western Michigan.

Taylor senior golfer Javan Johnson produced rounds of 69, 75 and 74 in helping his team to runner-up status at the 14-team Players Club Invitational in Yorktown.

Sophomore Damon Dickey tied for 13th place individually for Butler, posting a three-round total of even-par 213 at the Joe Feaganes Invitational in West Virginia.

Freshman Ava Ray led the UIndy Grey team to a 15th-place effort at Prairie View by shooting a three-round score of 231.

Franklin College men’s cross country was runner-up at the seven-team Hanover Invitational; Eli Cochrane placed 33rd for the Grizzlies. Also competing for FC were Drew McGaha and Drew Hargis.

Hanover women’s tennis defeated Manchester, 7-2; junior Rachel Pinnick won her No. 1 doubles match, but lost in three sets at No. 2 singles.

Indian Creek

Freshman Braxton Christie was the low scorer for Franklin College men’s golf, shooting scores of 77 and 83 to finish tied for 27th as the Grizzlies took part in the Battle at Belterra at Hanover.

Freshman Caden Ringer placed 81st in the men’s race as Grace College cross country took part in the Indiana Wesleyan Twilight Invitational.

Whiteland

Butler defensive back Quinn Warweg made two tackles, including one for a loss, in the Bulldogs’ 45-10 victory over Taylor.

Greenwood

Wabash College freshman linebacker Gavin Ruppert made eight tackles in a 56-12 loss to visiting North Central.

Sophomore Ethan Gray won at both No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles as Indiana Wesleyan men’s tennis downed Marian, 4-3. The Wildcats also blanked Mt. Vernon Nazarene, 7-0, with Gray winning his singles match.

Franklin College junior Mallory Watson placed 36th overall at the Hanover cross country invitational. Sophomore Noah McCracken took part in the men’s race for the Grizzlies.

Roncalli

Greenwood resident Grace Hegwood, a senior outside hitter for the University of Indianapolis, had a totals of 30 kills and 34 digs in four matches as the Greyhounds won two of four matches at the IUP Invitational in Pennsylvania.
