College notebook: Ruppert off to fast start for Wabash

Wabash College freshman linebacker Gavin Ruppert led all tacklers with a career-best 18 as the Little Giants lost a 45-42 home heartbreaker to Denison. The former Greenwood player also forced a fumble and broke up a pass.

Franklin

Marian junior Drew Byerly finished with five catches for 28 yards as the Knights stayed unbeaten with a 45-7 win at Missouri Baptist.

Junior linebacker Clayton Coll led Ball State in tackles with 10 and broke up a pass in the Cardinals’ 34-23 loss at Georgia Southern.

Javan Johnson helped Taylor men’s golf win the St. Francis Fall Invitational in Illinois, shooting scores of 76 and 71 to place sixth individually. Huntington’s Quin Edwards tied for eighth with a two-round total of 155.

Butler sophomore Damon Dickey finished 9 over par as the Bulldogs placed seventh at the Zach Johnson Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.

IUPUI junior volleyball player Brooke Phillips made 14 digs, had three assists and three services aces as the Jaguars lost in five sets to visiting Purdue Fort Wayne.

Center Grove

Ball State freshman volleyball player Katie Egenolf had 15 kills and a dig as the Cardinals lost in four sets against host Central Michigan. She added nine kills and a dig in a five-set loss to the Chippewas.

Butler sophomore Grace Boggess finished with nine kills and two digs as the Bulldogs won in four sets at DePaul. She had two kills and a dig in a loss at 19th-ranked Marquette.

Ashley Eck had 10 digs and three service aces for Eckerd College in its five-set loss to Rollins and 23 digs, four assists and an ace in a victory over Embry-Riddle.

Wisconsin setter Madison Hammill had 15 assists and three digs as the Badgers lost in three sets at Minnesota.

Jamie Brown contributed eight kills for Indiana State volleyball as it defeated Bradley, and one kill and a dig in a home loss to Illinois State.

Ball State sophomore Carson Steele carried the football 23 times for 119 yards in the Cardinals’ 34-23 loss at Georgia Southern. He also made a catch for eight yards.

Freshman Daniel Weems rushed for 55 yards and a pair of touchdowns to help lead NAIA No. 9 Indiana Wesleyan to a 63-6 victory over visiting Trinity International. Weems also caught two passes for a total of seven yards.

Cade Lansdell made three tackles and intercepted a pass for Wabash College in its 45-42 home loss to Denison.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Matt Hohlt made three tackles for Indiana in its 45-24 loss at Cincinnati. Teammate Connor Delp had two punt returns for a total of five yards.

Trent Veith had two catches for a total of 27 yards for DePauw as it routed visiting Wooster, 59-0.

Grace College senior Lucy Young carded a three-round score of 250 as the Lancers placed seventh of 12 teams at the Westminster Wasatch Invitational in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Sophomore Brandon Heffner and freshman Luke Beetz helped lead Marian men’s golf to a runner-up finish at the NAIA Midwest Regional.

St. Leo junior Alex Heck helped his team to a fifth-place tie at the 12-team Cougar Invitational in Columbus, Georgia, shooting three consecutive scores of 74.

Cincinnati senior golfer Sam Jean tied for 12th individually as the Bearcats placed sixth at the 12-team Old Town Collegiate.

Senior Noah Gillard tied for 13th individually with scores of 73, 70 and 69 as the Indiana men’s golf team placed seventh out of 14 teams at the Windon Memorial Classic.

Franklin College golfer Zach Ricketts tied for 15th individually at the IU East Invitational in Muncie, carding two scores of 80 as the Grizzlies finished sixth of seven teams.

Freshman golfer Braxton Christie shot scores of 87 and 88 for Franklin College as it placed sixth at the IU East Invitational.

Ball State defensive lineman John Harris (Greenwood) provided two tackles in the team’s 34-23 loss at Georgia Southern.

Senior Grace Hegwood (Greenwood) had 10 kills and three digs for UIndy volleyball in a three-set sweep of visiting Illinois Springfield.
